Review: The Get Alongs – Sunday Afternoon

Toronto’s The Get Alongs return with “Sunday Afternoon,” the second advance single from their upcoming album “Second To None”, set for June 19, 2026, via Having Fun / We Are Busy Bodies. After the sharper edge of “Come On”, this track opens a calmer lane, settling into melody, open space, and that slow drift of a summer day moving toward Toronto dusk, where street noise softens, and the sky turns warm and muted. Jangling guitars set the base, moving with a loose rolling motion while shimmering layers rise above them. The rhythm holds steady without pushing forward, giving room for a winding lead guitar line that wanders in with a casual touch before opening into a brief burst of energy. The sound carries touches of The Stone Roses in its rhythmic glow and a hint of early-90s indie-rock patience, while the melodic center sits closer to The Lemonheads in its ease and clarity.

Formed in 2017, Harrison Pickernell, Rory Pickernell, Eric Wood, and Tristan Catenacci have moved from scrappy garage beginnings toward a broader sound. Their debut, “Weather Permitting,” brought surf-touched indie rock songwriting, earning CBC airplay, European shows, including Reeperbahn, and support slots with Limblifter, Wunderhorse, and Cardinals. This new release continues that growth, showing a tighter focus on arrangement and tone. Recorded at Holy Mountain Sound in Montreal with producer Clayton Dupuis, the sessions highlight a more careful studio approach. Guitars shimmer rather than bite, the rhythm section settles into a relaxed pocket, and small details sit comfortably in the mix. The writing leaves room, letting moments breathe without losing direction.

I enjoy how the track stays with a calm motion that keeps pulling me back for another listen. I like the way the guitars sit in the mix and I like the song and it should be in everyone’s playlist. This is a track I keep returning to when I want something steady but still engaging. I like how it fits into quiet afternoons and late city walks, where sound and setting line up naturally. It sits in that sweet spot where indie rock warmth meets careful restraint, making it easy to let it run again without losing interest. Make sure to follow The Get Alongs and add “Sunday Afternoon” to your playlist so it stays in your rotation for easygoing afternoons, evening walks, and those in-between moments where you want something smooth playing in the background while the day slowly fades out.
