We spoke with Jenna Louise about “We Got This” and more!

Q: So “We Got This” feels really personal. When did you first know you wanted to turn that experience into a song?

A: I’ll be honest – this song was made just before Liam left. I already felt the overwhelming emotions coming over me in the run up to him leaving and I felt like I was already living the heartbreak in the lead up to those moments. The song was finalised in the first week of Liam’s departure and it helped finalise those emotional parts of the song. Ultimately, I remember thinking – this is exactly what music’s for and If I can write something to help me through those quiet nights and help an audience relate at the same time – it’s a bonus. To take something that hurts and turn it into something beautiful – ‘We Got This’ now isn’t just my story – it’s something people in all kinds of long-distance relationships can connect with, and I’m over the moon because people already are.

Q: You worked with The Dunwells again on this one. What’s it like being back in the studio with them? Do you guys just click creatively now?

A: Aww, I love working with Joe & Dave. It feels like working with family now. We’ve got such a good creative relationship and they know my sound and goals – we compliment each other really nicely. When we’re in the studio, it’s always such a positive space – we laugh a lot and they’re super supportive. They’re always at the end of the phone and are great with helping on a marketing strategy too -they’re not just my friends but they’re great colleagues too. I always come in with a vision and they just blow me away every time with the direction we end up in. Watch this space as there is so much more to come!

Q: The song balances heartbreak and hope so beautifully. How do you find that balance when you’re writing something that comes from such a real place?

A: I really wanted to write something that was real and emotional, but still had a positive spin. The feeling behind ‘We Got This’ comes from a hard place – of course! However, missing someone and dealing with distance is hard enough, I didn’t want it to be a hard song to listen to and perform. I wanted it to feel like a ‘pull you through’ song, something that reminds you that love can be strong even when it’s tested. I have so many heartbreak songs and I love them – but they’re emotional and they also sound heartbreaking too. I wanted this one to be different.

Q: You’ve talked about your partner being deployed. How did that shape not just the lyrics, but maybe even how you sang the song?

A: It changed everything, really. The lyrics came from what I am genuinely feeling, and when I recorded the vocals, I wanted that emotion to come through naturally – the cracks in the voice, the moments that feel real and just being present in my feelings. It took a while to get a take where I wasn’t actually getting upset – but we got there eventually! I always find when I think of Liam and I together in our happy moments – it genuinely makes me smile whilst I sing and I find myself getting through it.

Q: There’s this really cinematic feel to “We Got This”. Did you always want it to sound that big emotionally, or did it just grow into that?

A: Definitely – that was always the vision. I wanted it to feel emotional, but also warm and uplifting, like the kind of song that gives you strength and makes you smile or bop around. I love that Ella Henderson and Alex Warren style – it’s cinematic and heartfelt, but still feel-good and makes you sing loud in the car. That balance really fit what I wanted ‘We Got This’ to stand for and I really feel like Joe & Dave smashed this goal and brought my vision to life.

Q: You’ve had a great response from “Better With Us” and now this new single. How does it feel seeing more people connect with your music lately?

A: It honestly means the world. Seeing people connect with my music in that way is just incredible. I’ve had people using my songs for their weddings and bookings have been made for me to perform my songs live on their big day. I’m also really buzzing to mention that someone even asked for an acoustic version of ‘We Got This’ to walk down the aisle to – which absolutely blew me away. I feel so proud and privileged that something I’ve written can be part of such special moments in people’s lives.

Q: Do you remember the moment you finished writing “We Got This” and thought, “Yeah, that’s the one”?

A: I remember finishing it and just crying – in a good way. It was such a release. I knew I’d said exactly what I wanted to say, and it captured the emotion perfectly. That’s when I thought, Yeah, this is the one. Seeing the emotion in Liam’s eyes too really cemented it.

Q: You’re known for being really open in your songwriting. Do you ever find it hard to share so much of yourself in your music?

A: I’ve always worn my heart on my sleeve, so being open in my songs just feels natural to me. Of course it can feel exposing sometimes, but that’s kind of the point – it’s what makes the music honest. I’d rather be raw and real than hold back. My songs are my story, and that vulnerability is part of who I am as an artist and I think that shines through in my vocals.

Q: The Dunwells add such a warmth to the track. What do you think it is about your sound and theirs that just works?

A: I think it just clicks because we all lead with emotion. The Dunwells have such a warmth and honesty in their production, and that really complements my sound. They know how to build those cinematic moments without losing the heart of the song. We just get each other creatively – it feels really natural every time we work together. We all have such passion for music, we make music that is relatable and has meaning – we are very alike. They share the same excitement as me too – I love how passionate they are about our work, it really makes a difference.

Q: And now that “We Got This” is out in the world, what’s next for you this year? More writing, maybe some live shows, or something new on the horizon?

A: I’m still writing a lot at the moment – there is alot of work being done with Joe and Dave and there are a few songs that feel really special and I can’t wait to share them. I am working towards my second album which will involve a tour at some point and more wedding bookings. ‘We Got This’ has opened some really lovely doors, so I’m just excited to see where it leads – even some collaborations and support shows might be on the way!
