I stumbled on When In May’s new EP Dynamics In The Morning a few weeks back, and honestly, I’ve had it on repeat ever since. From the first track, there’s this brilliant layering of shoegaze fuzz, pop‑punk energy, jazzy chords, and indie-rock melodic twists—all compressed into crisp, under‑four‑minute bursts. Brett Fitzpatrick’s lyrics cut through with dry wit and metaphors that feel straight from a real conversation, which is refreshingly human compared to some over‑polished stuff out there. For me m the standout tracks are “House”, “Bigloud!”, and “A Love Song”.
What hooked me right away was the way each song shifts, like jumping between chill mornings and buzzing midday moods. It never gets stale. One moment it’s lush and introspective, the next it kicks into a punchy chorus that you can’t help bouncing along to. The band has obviously expanded their palette from the first EP, sprinkling in elements of jazz and contemporary orchestration without ever overdoing it.
My favorite thing? The vocals. Brett’s voice floats above the mix with this conversational charm. You almost feel like he’s talking to you over coffee, not singing at you from behind a mic. And the production frames it perfectly, nothing feels too big or artificial, which is not easy to do with that kind of genre-hopping ambition.
I like the song, and it should be in everyone’s playlist because it just vibes like your best friend slid into your DMs with a tune they know you’ll love, and you play it on repeat while cooking breakfast, walking the dog, or zoning out during a commute—seriously, it’s that effortlessly catchy yet thoughtful.
Listening to songs so you don’t have to! Just kidding :D, you totally should. Music blogger by day, nurse by night
