Review: Vanderlye – Romantic Anarchy

Vanderlye’s latest single, “Romantic Anarchy”, released on January 10th, 2025, marks a significant evolution in the band’s sound. Diverging from their previous guitar-driven tracks, this song introduces the piano as its central instrument, creating a rich and emotive atmosphere. The male/female duet vocals, a hallmark of Vanderlye’s style, are showcased beautifully, with Sean McGarvey and Becky delivering a compelling performance that captures the song’s introspective essence.

“Romantic Anarchy” delves into the complexities of modern dating, using it as a metaphor to explore themes of promiscuity, unease, and self-doubt. The collaboration between McGarvey and fellow musician Rhauri Brannigan is evident in the song’s cohesive structure and poignant lyrics, reflecting a seamless blend of their creative energies.

Recorded at the renowned Castle of Doom studios and produced by Jamie Holmes, the track benefits from high-quality production that enhances its atmospheric soundscapes. Fans had the opportunity to experience “Romantic Anarchy” live at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut on January 11th, 2025, where Vanderlye supported LeisureLand alongside Lost In Vancouver and Denver National Hockey Team.

As a precursor to their upcoming EP slated for release later in 2025, “Romantic Anarchy” signifies a promising direction for Vanderlye. Their ability to evolve while maintaining their core identity suggests that the band is poised for continued success in the alternative rock scene.
