Graz underground rock scene standout Modula Nation has put together an exciting record titled “The Rift”. Released on Tonzonen Records, this progressive rock quartet delivers a wild mix of experimental space rock, heavy industrial riffs, complex rhythms, and tight grooves. Having shared stages with icons like Tito & Tarantula, Skinny Puppy, and Mother’s Cake, the group brings serious live energy straight into the studio.
The project stems from singer and multi-instrumentalist Heinz Wallner and bassist Ricardo Paz, whose late-night jam sessions laid the groundwork. Joined by Philipp Pluhar on drums and electronic instruments along with Markus Steinrück on guitars, the quartet crafts an engaging soundscape across nine tracks.
Tracks like “Silicon Carne” showcase a lively blend of funk rhythms, hard-hitting guitar riffs, and versatile vocals. The title track “The Rift” explodes with punk attitude, heavy riffs, and nostalgic synthesizer layers. Meanwhile, “The Breakout” blends funk and alternative rock, drawing inspiration from acts like Faith No More and Muse. The album closes out with the massive ten-minute epic “Soul Fever”, showcasing their willingness to explore.
In my personal opinion, “The Rift” stands out as an absolute blast to listen to from start to finish. The band effortlessly bridges classic rock sensibilities with modern heavy soundscapes, creating a completely fresh listening experience.
