Review: Joanne Powell – Lay Your Head Down

Joanne Powell has a way of bringing deep emotion into every note she sings, and her single “LAY YOUR HEAD DOWN” is a stunning example. Honoring her partner of ten years, the late Canadian music journalist Lenny Stoute, this release carries profound heart and sincere remembrance. Following his battle with a degenerative disease, Stoute chose to pass away with dignity through Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) on September 22, 2024. Releasing two years after his passing, this track stands as a tender tribute to a cherished bond.

Co-written with guitarist Mike Freedman, the arrangement opens with a quiet funereal drumbeat that returns at the end, grounding the track in deep reflection. Joanne’s rich contralto voice anchors the piece, backed by glowing vocal harmonies from Heather Bambrick, Kim Doolittle, and Jono Grant. A standout tenor saxophone solo by Allison Young adds a beautiful layer of warmth, while Grant expertly handles all other instruments alongside production, mixing, and mastering duties. Together, they build a comforting soundscape around a Gospel choir chorus.

Joanne transforms personal heartache into a warm, comforting hug for anyone navigating loss. Joanne hopes the piece offers compassion to Lenny’s memory while bringing solace to listeners. It accomplishes that goal with great beauty.
