Review: VELCRO DOG – Fjord Noir

Norwegian multi-instrumentalist Tony Gonzalez is back with his second album under his solo project Velcro Dog. The new record, titled “Fjord Noir”, arrives through Westergaard Records. Many listeners know Gonzalez from his time in heavy rock bands like Barren Womb. On this project, he steps away from loud noise to make something much quieter. He builds a warm world out of acoustic guitars, dark humor, and stories inspired by the cold coast of Norway. He calls his style fjord noir, mixing traditional folk with slow country sounds.

Recorded with engineer Vebjørn Svanberg Numme at Piir Studio in Trondheim, the record blends acoustic picking with banjo, melodica, and soft background singing. Mastered by Alan Douches, the sound stays open and natural.

Key songs include “The Gonzo Futurist Manifesto”, which uses bright chords beneath sarcastic words like “You can’t shovel sunshine, my friend”. Another standout is “I’ll Stick to Fiction”, a song about hiding inside stories to get away from hard times. Other tracks like “Concrete Kisses” and “Thirteen to the Dozen” bring in pretty vocal harmonies. From the slow opening of “Send Me Downstream” to the slightly distorted guitar tones on “Roaccutan”, the album finds a great balance between sad thoughts and gentle hope.
