We spoke with Tommy Charles about “Love Train” and more!

Hi! “Love Train” blends disco-soul, country, and Americana. What inspired you to bring these genres together for this new single?

A: Those genres made up who I am as an artist. I have performed all of them over the last two decades and so it feels natural that they are starting to blend into what I do.

Your deep crooning vocals are a standout on “Love Train.” How did you develop your signature singing style over the years?

A: I think that, as artists, we become who we are and do what we do by imitating our heroes. I sing like the artists I’ve always looked up to: Roy, Elvis, Tom Jones, Sinatra, Marty Robbins. My mom had a big part in it too; she detected an affinity for that style in my voice and pushed me to learn and rehearse that music over and over again.

The track channels the energy of Tom Jones and the elegance of Fleetwood Mac. Were these influences intentional while creating it?

A: Not intentional, but it does not surprise me because those artists have been the soundtrack of my life since forever. Their influence shows up in what I do, want it or not.

“Love Train” feels both timeless and fresh. How do you balance vintage musical influences with modern production techniques in your work?

A: I’m grateful for the support of my team for this work and for tackling this precise challenge. The Mountain Daisies provided me with great wisdom in the studio, while also tuning into my vision for the song. Spencer Cheyne on the mix was a true artist at mixing the song in a way that achieves that balance. It’s a team effort !

You’re performing “Love Train” at the 2025 Country Music Alberta Awards. What can fans expect from your live performance?

A: It was a moment I had been envisioning for a long time now. I had rehearsed and seen it in my mind a million times. I am so grateful for the Albertan country music community for giving me that showcase and for believing in me. I was ready to set it on fire, and I had a great time on the stage with my partner Kaylin on backing vocals and the formidable house band.

You’re nominated for Horizon Male Artist and Album of the Year. How does it feel to receive this industry recognition?

A: They mean a lot. They encompass all the support and the faith that my community here has for me. Those recognitions are responsibilities for me to show up and do what I do the best I can.

You sing in multiple languages, including Spanish, French, and Portuguese. Do you ever consider recording “Love Train” in another language?

A: Good question ! Maybe Spanish ! I feel like it could do well in the Latin market, and it’s a market that I have had my eyes on for a while now.

Your music draws from legends like Roy Orbison and Marty Robbins. What do you think makes their timeless sound so special?

A: They have a unique gift of singing that they fully tapped into. They have a unique grace, and class that makes them timeless. They are equal parts heroic, masculine and vulnerable.

“Love Train” carries a smooth, intoxicating groove. Can you share any stories from the recording process that helped shape its sound?

A: I had a clear vision for it: a disco/soul drum beat, that hints to ‘’You make loving fun’’ by Fleetwood Mac, with some Mexican trumpets, a spoonful of pedal steel to make it country and some rich back vocals to infuse some soul to the song and elevate the energy.

You regularly tour across Canada and Texas. How has performing live influenced the way you approach songwriting and recording?

A: Live music is everything to me. Nowadays, I write songs that I want to enjoy singing live. I write for my voice, always having a show in mind, or, most of the time. I rarely write for others for this reason.
