Review: Near Death Experience – Flight

Near Death Experience put together something really memorable with “Flight”. From the first few moments, the song has a lift that pulls you in fast, but there is also a real emotional sting beneath all that brightness. The story behind it centers on a sudden connection, and an equally sudden loss, and that push between joy and heartbreak gives the track a strong pulse from start to finish. It sounds big, open, and full of motion, but there is also a personal side to it that keeps it grounded. A big part of why “Flight” works so well is the way the band builds the arrangement. The opening chorus comes in full of harmony, with Jami Nunes adding a strong vocal presence that gives the hook even more lift alongside Ian Whiteling. Then the song dips into a funk-driven verse that keeps everything moving without losing that emotional pull. Jack Dawkins brings in a sax that adds a loose, jazzy edge, while Guilherme Dessuy’s wah-wah guitar and Amar Grover’s bass give the track a groove that is hard not to get pulled into. Every part has a purpose, and nothing sounds like filler.

The bridge is another high point. The mix of sax, guitar, and Joshua Van Ness on drums gives the song a real spark right when it needs it most. There is a strong rise in energy, then a quick breath, then one more lift before the track ends. That final stretch leaves a real mark because the song never overstays its welcome. It gets in, says what it needs to say, and leaves you wanting another listen. I like “Flight” because it gives you groove, emotion, and personality without sounding forced. For me, this is the kind of song that earns repeat plays because every listen pulls out another detail, whether it is the chorus, the sax, or the way the whole band locks in together.

Another nice touch is that the release includes “Flight (Return)”, which gives the whole single a bit more shape and makes it more than a one-song stop. Taken as a whole, this release shows a band with strong chemistry and a clear identity. Near Death Experience knows how to mix soul, funk, and a light psychedelic edge into something that sounds alive and human. Make sure you follow Near Death Experience, keep “Flight” in rotation, and add it to your playlist because this is one of those songs that can brighten up a slow afternoon, wake up a late-night drive, or give your weekly music mix a real spark, and it deserves a spot with the tracks people go back to again and again.
