If you haven’t come across Midnight Mystery Club yet, this is a good place to start. The California duo, David Paul Newell and Llavar Mindley, writes songs that sound like they were pulled straight out of a late-70s record crate, and “Heavenly”, off their album “Telescope”, is one of the best examples of that. The song kicks off with the narrator admitting they’re after something they can’t quite name, a secret still unsolved. From there, it slides into a warm, sun-bleached groove that mixes deep house with soulful, dreamy Balearic touches. It’s the kind of song that sounds right at sunset, on a rooftop, with nowhere to be.
Newell sings it easy and unhurried, and Mindley’s drumming keeps the whole thing grounded without stepping on the softer synths floating around it. Nothing here is trying to outdo anything else, and that’s why it works so well. I’ll be honest, the chorus got me. It’s warm and a little bittersweet at once, and that combination is rare enough that it’s worth pointing out. Songs this well put together don’t show up every week, and that’s reason enough to hit repeat.
Go follow Midnight Mystery Club wherever you listen to music so you catch what they put out next, and add “Heavenly” to your playlist today. It’s a song that holds up whether you’re driving at night or just sitting still with your headphones on, and their older records, like “Reason or Rhyme”, have that same warm, retro pull if you want more once this one ends.
Listening to songs so you don’t have to! Just kidding :D, you totally should. Music blogger by day, nurse by night
