Review: Matt Saxton – Rough Patch

Matt Saxton’s new track “Rough Patch” hit me right in the chest in the best way. It’s one of those songs that doesn’t need to shout to be heard; it just quietly works its way into your bones. There’s this mix of honesty and warmth in his voice that makes you feel like you’re sitting across from him at a kitchen table, having one of those late-night chats about love, mistakes, and trying to figure it all out. The song is about a couple going through a tough time but choosing to stick it out, and I think that kind of emotional realism is rare and refreshing.

Musically, it’s subtle but super effective. There’s a kind of folky simplicity layered with just the right touch of electronic atmosphere; not overproduced, just textured enough to support the lyrics. The whole vibe reminded me a bit of early Iron & Wine or José González, but with a British twist that makes it feel even more personal. I also love how it was inspired by real moments during the COVID lockdown. Sanding the house down as a metaphor for repairing a relationship? That’s perfect.

I’ve had “Rough Patch” on repeat all morning and I’m telling you right now, I like this song so much that I honestly think it should be in everyone’s playlist, whether you’re coupled up or just trying to survive the daily chaos of life.
