Review: KNIGHTRESS – Unbecoming

KNIGHTRESS is back with “Unbecoming”, the first single off their upcoming debut full-length “The Sentient Condition”, set to arrive this fall from Studio Sainte-Marthe with producer Francis Caste behind the board. For anyone who hasn’t crossed paths with this Paris band yet, their whole identity centers on something almost no metal act does: putting the violin front and center as a real lead instrument, not just a texture layered underneath the guitars. The band is built around Emily Palen, who handles violin, vocals, piano, and composition, and “Unbecoming” is her statement piece on personal sovereignty and owning your own choices. That intent is easy to feel from the first listen, even before you catch every line. There’s a defiant, almost anthemic pull to the track, and it aligns naturally with the band’s broader goal of speaking for people who feel trapped, whether by a system, a relationship, or their own circumstances.

Their sound draws on bands like Architects, Spiritbox, and Gojira, but none of it comes across as imitation. Palen’s classical background reshapes those modern metal influences into something more layered and unpredictable. Alongside guitarist Léo Caviglioli, bassist Waldo Losada, and drummer Prosper Duffours, the band builds a mix that’s heavy and orchestral at once. Clean vocals slide into harsher ones, violin lines cut across the guitar riffs, and none of it feels forced together. This is a strong way to open a rollout. It’s approachable enough to draw in new listeners, and it still gives longtime fans a clear line back to Palen’s earlier work as KnightressM1. I’m curious to hear how “Unbecoming” sits inside the full record once November comes around.

If this one grabs you, follow KNIGHTRESS on their socials so you catch every update on the album, upcoming shows, and any new singles they put out before the record lands. Add “Unbecoming” to your rotation, pass it along to anyone into genre-bending metal, and keep “The Sentient Condition” on your radar for later this year. This is a band building toward something worth paying attention to.
