Review: Elephant Moon – Where Were You

There’s something about “Where Were You” that grabs you from the first soft pluck of acoustic guitar and won’t let go. Recorded live in one take with ribbon mics, Anders Dal’s voice feels like he’s in your living room, dry, warm, and completely unfiltered. A really beautiful and brave choice that sets the whole vibe. Around that, subtle piano, lap steel, and analogue synth slowly drift in, layering the song like a memory unfolding. Simple, honest, and genuinely intimate.

The way the track floats between indie folk, ambient singer-songwriter, and this sort of hazy, cinematic Americana makes it hard to pin down in the best way. I love that recurring line, “Where were you”, it hits like a faded Polaroid you pull from an old box, making you pause and think of those voices, places, and late-night silences that still live somewhere in your head. And then that chorus line: “Tomorrow is a ticket we travel on”. It’s such a quietly hopeful line. Doesn’t try to be profound. Just kind of lands.

And honestly, I like the song and it should be in everyone’s playlist, because its mix of intimacy and drifting hope is just too rare and beautiful not to be heard by as many people as possible. This is one of those songs you play late at night, staring out the window, thinking about people you miss, and people you haven’t met yet.
