Review: Brook Fox – Rome

Brook Fox lands on something really fun and genuine with “Rome”. From the first few seconds, it has that bright indie rock energy that makes you want to move a little, even if you’re just listening on your own. Knowing it comes from Burry Port in South-West Wales gives it an extra bit of character, and it fits perfectly as the second single leading into the upcoming EP “Everybody’s In Love”. What I like here is how natural everything comes across. The track was recorded with his live band for the first time, and you can hear that chemistry straight away. It doesn’t feel overworked or stiff; it sounds like a group of people who actually enjoy playing together. There’s a clear nod to bands like Two Door Cinema Club and Bloc Party, but it never feels like he’s trying to copy anyone. It’s more like he’s picked up that upbeat indie spirit and made it his own.

The story behind the song keeps it grounded, too. It’s based on a night out in his hometown and that feeling of wanting to escape being judged for who you are. That idea comes through in a really easy, relatable way. It’s not overcomplicated, just honest and straight to the point, which makes it stick. I’ve got to say, I really liked this one more than I expected, and it’s been on repeat for me since the first listen. It’s one of those tracks that creeps into your head and stays there for days. Working again with Tim Hamill clearly helped bring everything together. The sound is sharp and lively, and you can tell it’s built with both streaming and live shows in mind. It’s easy to imagine this getting a big reaction in a packed room.

If you’re into indie that actually has some personality, “Rome” is worth your time. Make sure you keep up with Brook Fox, because this feels like part of something bigger, and add the track to your playlist while you’re at it, it’s got that kind of replay value that doesn’t wear off quickly and you’ll probably find yourself coming back to it more than you planned.
