Aderyn just gave us “Please”, the third single from her upcoming EP “Hot Pink!”, and it might be her most gutting song to date. She wrote the whole thing in twelve minutes, capturing it on a voice memo before she could second-guess a single word, and that urgency is baked into every line. Gethin Pearson (Charli XCX, Orla Gartland) handled production, building the track around slacker guitars and double-tracked vocals that sound like a secret being confessed rather than sung. The subject is loving someone without any guarantee they love you back, and Aderyn pulls that ache into religious territory, treating her devotion like an act of faith rather than a straightforward heartbreak song.
The patience in the arrangement is what really gets me. Aderyn holds back until the last refrain, when an organ recorded inside a Pembrokeshire chapel by Owain Fleetwood Jenkins comes in and turns the whole song into something close to a hymn. There are shades of Mazzy Star in the haze of it, with a bit of Lucy Dacus and Du Blonde grit underneath. Personally, this is one of the most affecting things Aderyn has released. It is not a big, dramatic breakup anthem. It is quieter and messier, which honestly makes it hit harder.
“Please” sets up “Hot Pink!” beautifully, and if names like Courtney Barnett, Beabadoobee, or Soccer Mommy are already on your radar, this one belongs there too.
