The Low Stakes kick off their debut album with “5 Days Over”, a short and sharp track that doesn’t waste a second. At just over two minutes, it’s a burst of raw honesty and stripped-back songwriting that grabs your attention without ever raising its voice. It’s one of those songs that says a lot by keeping it simple.
The duo, Eric Colville and Ann Holbrook, make it clear right away that they’re not here to play it safe. There’s a real bite to the lyrics, a lived-in feeling to the vocals, and a no-frills arrangement that feels intentional. Even the title itself sparked pushback, with some industry folks asking them to censor it. The band didn’t budge. That refusal to clean things up says everything about their approach.
“I’ve got you” lands like a promise and a threat at the same time, depending on how you hear it. The acoustic guitar and vocals are front and center, with no distractions. It feels like you’ve stumbled into someone’s private moment and they’re letting you stay a while.
Personally, I love how unfiltered it is. The song doesn’t try to over-explain itself, and that’s part of why it works. It caught me off guard in the best way. I found myself replaying it just to sit in that mood a little longer. If you haven’t heard The Low Stakes yet, now’s a good time to start. Follow them on socials and add “5 Days Over” to your playlist. It’s the kind of track that grows on you without even trying, and if this is how they’re opening the album, there’s probably a lot more to dig into. Don’t miss it.
Listening to songs so you don’t have to! Just kidding :D, you totally should. Music blogger by day, nurse by night
