Review: Jacob Shakespeare – sunflower

Jacob Shakespeare’s new track “sunflower” is one of those songs that makes you stop mid-scroll and just listen. It’s bright and emotionally messy in the best way, like a sugar rush blended with a diary entry. The beat is pure indie pop sunshine, catchy, bouncy, and full of that kind of chaotic charm that instantly reminded me of having a dumb crush at 2am and overthinking every single text. Jacob captures that perfectly.

What makes “sunflower” feel special is how personal it is. He wrote and produced the whole thing himself, and you can tell. It’s not over-polished or overly commercial. It’s raw in just the right places, and his voice carries that slightly cracked vulnerability that pulls you in. I love how he leans into his identity, not hiding or toning anything down, and instead makes you feel like you’re sitting in his bedroom while he sings about being young, queer, and emotionally overwhelmed in a way that feels almost too real.

And I’m just gonna say it: I like this song so much that I’ve been playing it on repeat, humming it while doing the dishes, walking to the bus, and telling my friends that “sunflower” by Jacob Shakespeare should be in literally everyone’s playlist because it’s got this mix of charm and chaos that’s so addicting it’s actually unreal.

If you like honest, bedroom-born bops that feel both vulnerable and danceable, hit play on this one.
