We spoke with Shawn Gavin Thomas about “Focused” and more!

Hey! What personal experiences inspired the lyrics and themes of your song “Focused”?

A: It was during the pandemic where I was talking with my producer about all of the struggles and demons everyone was facing, and I brought up the Winston Churchill quote that repeats many times in the chorus “If you’re going through hell, keep going!”. I took that hook and it literally became the song. The song is about no matter what obstacles, trials and tribulations in life, you have to keep moving forward. Definitely this song was an inspiration to me because of what people went through during the pandemic and our current situation in the world.

How has your musical background influenced the sound and style of “Focused”?

A: I’ve been a Professional Singer and Musician since I was in Middle School. I honestly didn’t even know I would be doing music for a career until then. I knew with this particular single, I wanted to make a statement. I wanted this song to just plain rock and be in your face.

Can you share any challenges you faced during the writing and production of “Focused”?

A: Not too many. I had a basic structure in mind and kept the chord structure and pattern simple and let the drums and music carry itself.

What message do you hope listeners take away from “Focused”?

A: That no matter what obstacles are in your way, if people say no to you, say to them, just watch. Keep moving forward, no matter the distance or distraction you may face. That’s the main reason why I wrote this song. It keeps me grounded as well as anyone that needs to be reminded that you matter.

How does “Focused” represent your growth as an artist compared to your previous work?

A: Well this is my very first original song that I wrote EVER, so I can’t really compare! However, I did release a Country Rock cover of a Dierks Bentley song “What Was I Thinkin'” that definitely has my own spin to it! A little bit of the Country feel, and a little bit of a rock flavor to it. It’s definitely different, and I even confused an artist that listened to it to an original song! I definitely made it my own!

Are there any specific artists or genres that inspired the musical direction of “Focused”?

A: Metallica and Jelly Roll. Metallica is one of my all time favorite Heavy Metal Bands, so the James Hetfield influence was huge on this one. Jelly Roll is one of today’s hottest country artists, so the influence on the melody really struck me with him. If you hear the main chorus melody of the song, it has the natural high then low (similar to his song “Need A Favor”). I heard that particular song from Jelly Roll and I was immediately hooked to a working melody line to Focused.

In what ways do you think “Focused” pushes the boundaries of your usual music style?

A: From the get-go, I wanted this song to just rock in your face. I’m not normally known as a rock vocalist, so I decided to push the boundaries and add my own drive and flavor to it. I think I accomplished that with this single.

What are your main goals for your music career in the next five years?

A: To continue to grow, play in more venues, and continue to grow my base. In a market where demand is constant, you have to continually stay on your toes and be active. The minute you’re not, you can get lost pretty quickly. I’m definitely my own unique artist.

Can you give us a sneak peek into any upcoming projects or collaborations you’re excited about?

A: I’m a Multi-Genre Artist, so I have another New Country song in the works right now which will be the next single release.

How do you plan to evolve your music and artistic identity in future projects?

A: My ultimate goal is to be diverse and reach out to various avenues and expand the territories. I’m a Multi-Genre Artist that does a little bit of everything. Also adding more elements and creativity each song I release.
