Review: George Last – Last Looks Back

“Last Looks Back” is an impressive debut for Melbourne-based artist George Last. This EP, which fuses indie, alternative, and singer-songwriter components, creates a lush, DIY tapestry of sounds that touch the listener. Every track is a chapter in a colorful story of introspection and retrospection, taking you into its own musical world.

The hit single, “Richmond”, represents the spirit of 1980s inner-city life with its moody opening, which builds into a lively piano-driven romp, complete with growling brass and sharp tremolo guitar stabs. This song is a powerful opener that raises the standard for the rest of the songs. “Green Abyss” provides a positive contrast with its lively rhythm and a story of personal triumph, while “Black Hull” fascinates with the ghost ship’s journey to nowhere, demonstrating George’s ability to tell complex stories through music.

“Darkside” is a touching and intimate song, a slow emo dirge where George confesses to lost parents, adding an emotional depth that is both moving and artfully created. “Anonymous Tip” changes pace with its reggae-ish background and rocky twists that offers an escapist plot that adds a lively dimension to the EP’s sound palette. The final song, “Looking Back”, is a tribute to early ‘70s orchestrated rock, in the style of Elton John’s “Madman Across the Water”. It’s a perfect closer that not only acknowledges musical influences but also sums up the reflective nature of the EP.

The production, expertly managed by Lilith Lane and skillfully polished by Ben Coe, guarantees that each track offers both transparency and depth, turning “Last Looks Back” into not just a listening event, but an emotional odyssey. George Last has definitely made himself an outstanding talent in the indie music scene with this debut, leaving even more to expect in the future.
