Review: Freya Magee – Duplicity

Freya Magee’s debut single “Duplicity” has been stuck in my head since the first time I heard it. There’s this late-night, almost cinematic vibe that hits right away, the kind of song you put on during a solo drive when the road feels endless and your mind is somewhere else entirely. The lyrics really pull you in, especially that line about her hair being “dark on the left… blonde on the right,” which perfectly matches the cover art and nails the feeling of being split between two versions of yourself.

The production is so clean but not overdone; it leaves room for her voice to just float over these soft, haunting guitar layers. I love that it feels intimate, like a secret someone is quietly letting you in on. You can tell this came from a real place since Freya started writing during lockdown and you can still hear that raw, bedroom-songwriter energy even though it’s polished now.

I caught a couple of early blog mentions saying it’s “intense and immersive” and honestly, they nailed it. There’s something about the way she delivers each line that makes you feel like you’re right there in that moment of indecision with her. I like this song so much, and it should definitely be in everyone’s playlist because it’s one of those tracks that sneaks up on you and stays, like a soundtrack to late-night thoughts you can’t shake.

If this is just the first taste of what’s coming on her EP, we’re all in for something special.
