Review: The Goods – Goodbye Summertime

The Goods have returned with their second album, “Goodbye Summertime”, and it stands as a huge step forward for the Oakland band. Written and produced mainly by Rob Good, the record moves through an easy blend of classic guitar pop, sixties psychedelia, sunshine pop, and jangling folk rock. Instead of relying only on old sounds, the album puts these styles together into a smooth project that feels alive, carefully made, and fun to listen to from start to finish.

Across the whole record, the band balances high energy with quieter, gentle moments. Songs like “Wing” open up with bright melodies and a fast rhythm that brings a clear feeling of joy. On the other hand, tracks like “Summer’s Almost Gone” slow things down, capturing a soft feeling of time passing by. Good recorded and produced most of the music inside his Oakland studio, giving the whole collection a warm home feel while keeping the instruments clear and full. Small guest additions from Cherron Arens, Yea-Ming Chen, and Ian McBrayer bring extra layers of singing, Wurlitzer, and Mellotron, adding depth to the sound without making it crowded.

What makes “Goodbye Summertime” work so well is its strong sense of flow and clear songwriting. Every change between songs feels natural, letting crunchy guitar lines slide into quiet acoustic parts and back again. The singing stays a major highlight, holding the catchy tunes together with sweet harmonies that recall classic California pop styles. It is an album that rewards quiet listening, showing new details in the instruments every time you play it through.

In the end, “Goodbye Summertime” stands out as one of the best pop records of the year. It shows a group that is comfortable with its style, able to mix simple songwriting with fresh, honest energy. The result is a collection of songs that feels timeless and personal at the same time, offering plenty of great tunes to enjoy. Anyone who likes classic guitar pop and warm singing will find a lot to love in this second release. Make sure to listen to the record on your favorite music app, keep an eye on their upcoming live shows, and add these tracks to your daily playlist.
