Review: Bgbgb – Character Studies

London-based singer/songwriter and actor Bgbgb (known to his fans as Bg) is the kind of artist who refuses to be put in a box. His latest release, “Character Studies”, arrived on April 24, 2026, and it’s the sort of bold, genre-blending project that immediately reminds you why independent music is so exciting right now. The EP is built around a fascinating creative idea: each track (except the lead single) is written and performed from the perspective of a character Bg has actually portrayed as an actor, on stage, in short films, in musicals, immersive theatre, and beyond. It’s not a gimmick; it’s a genuinely clever way to map a coming-of-age narrative onto music, tracing the journey from boyhood to full-grown manhood. The result is five tracks that feel distinct from each other while still cohering into a satisfying, unified body of work.

The EP opens with “Man’s Journey”, the lead single and the one track that steps outside the character device. It functions almost like an overture, spelling out the EP’s big-picture message before the character-driven pieces take over. It’s a shoutout to the path men walk to grow into themselves, and it does a great job of priming your ears for everything that follows. From there, the record moves across a surprisingly wide sonic landscape. You get hip-hop energy, R&B warmth, afrobeat influence, gospel-layered harmonies, and even touches of electronic production, all blended together in ways that keep things fresh from track to track. “Mr Follow the Script” brings a dance-influenced flavor, giving the EP a welcome burst of movement, while “Rob” goes deep into layered, gospel-choir-style harmonies that build into something genuinely powerful by the final moments.

What makes the whole thing work is Bg’s commitment. Whether he’s rapping, harmonizing, or delivering spoken word passages, he fully inhabits each character. You can actually hear the shifts in his voice and delivery as he moves between personas, which is something you really don’t hear often enough in music. Personally, “Character Studies” is one of the most creatively ambitious EPs to come out of the UK independent scene this year. It’s rare to hear an artist fuse two distinct art forms, acting and music, this naturally, and rarer still to have it land with this much impact. The fact that it was entirely engineered, mixed, and mastered by a single collaborator, Row Black, with whom Bg has worked for nearly eight years, gives it a cohesive sonic identity that ties everything together beautifully.

If you haven’t already, do yourself a massive favor and go stream “Character Studies” on Spotify right now. This is an artist who operates across multiple creative disciplines with real depth and vision, and staying plugged into his world means you’ll be the first to know when the next project arrives. Add “Man’s Journey” to your playlist, add the full EP while you’re at it, and spread the word. Bgbgb is one of those artists you’ll want to say you were listening to early.
