There are summer shows, and then there are the ones you talk about for years. Brooklyn Bowl is hosting one of those on June 27, when New Orleans funk institution Galactic, vocalist Jelly Joseph, and Brooklyn’s own Circus Mind all share the same stage for a night that has no business being anything less than electric. Circus Mind kicks things off as special guests, and for them, this is personal. The Brooklyn-based outfit has spent the last few years building a reputation across the Northeast with a sound that resists easy categorization. Funk, soul, jazz, and the wide-open spirit of jam improvisation all run through their music with an ease that only comes from a band that has genuinely figured out who they are. Opening this bill at one of the borough’s most beloved rooms is the kind of moment that changes the conversation around a band, and if you have not been paying attention to Circus Mind yet, June 27 is a good night to start.
Then Galactic takes over, and the room shifts. The New Orleans collective has been one of the most respected live acts in American music since the mid-1990s, with over 2,000 performances and collaborations spanning Macy Gray, The Roots, and B.B. King. Their show is famously unpredictable in the best possible way. Classic New Orleans rhythms hold everything together, but rock, soul, and pop textures push and pull against that foundation in ways that make each night genuinely its own thing. You do not walk out of a Galactic show having heard a repeat of what someone caught three cities back. Alongside them is vocalist Jelly Joseph, whose presence adds real weight to an already stacked bill. Rooted in funk and soul, she brings the kind of vocal power that holds a room before the first chorus is done, and her voice against Galactic’s rhythm section is the kind of pairing that reminds you why nothing recorded fully captures what happens when a great live band locks in with the right singer.
Brooklyn Bowl is the right room for all of this. Intimate enough to feel close, serious enough on sound that nothing gets lost, and home to crowds that actually show up to listen.
