We spoke with John Smyths about “Now I’m Wiser” and more!

Q: Hi! When you listen back to “Now I’m Wiser” now, what moment in your life does it instantly
take you back to?
A: Hi, thanks for this interview. Well, it takes me back to my youth, where I was on the wrong side

Q: This song feels really reflective. Was there a specific turning point where you felt like, “yeah,
I’ve learned something here”?
A: Haha, well, you know, I grew older, so I ́ve learned a lot about life. I ́ve seen it all and now I
found my peace.

Q: You’ve got this mix of country storytelling and rock roots in your sound. Does that just come
naturally at this point, or is it something you still consciously shape?
A: I really don ́t know. I guess it comes naturally. I grew up with rock music like Kiss, AC/DC, Iron
Maiden, you know, stuƯ like that. And I always listened to the lyrics. And Country, well it ́s a
kinda storytelling, so here the lyrics are also important to me and the way I want to tell a story.

Q: There’s a real sense of lived experience in your voice on this track. Do you approach recording
diƯerently when a song is this personal?
A: No, it purely natural. If a song is that personal for me, then I sing it with the right emotions.
There is no diƯerent production needed for something like that.
Q: The song feels almost like a late-night conversation with yourself. Do you usually write in that
kind of headspace?
A: It depends on the mood I ́m in. Sometimes I write a song concerning me, sometimes a song
about what could happen to you or even have a wonderful idea about having fun, going to a bar,
drink to much, you those kind of things.

Q: You’ve been making music for a long time. Do songs like this come easier now, or do they
actually take more out of you emotionally?

A: They come more and more easier now. It wasn ́t like “Now I ́m Wiser” was a diƯicult thing for
me to do,, I was just reflecting on the way my life went, how I was, where I am right now. And that
feels good.

Q: There’s a subtle nostalgia running through the track. Do you find yourself looking back more
these days, or still focused on what’s ahead?

A: Mmmm, well, the fact is that, when you are getting older, you look back at the past, sweet
memories and lesser sweet memories. On the other hand, I want to look forward, because I have
still so many plans and ideas to accomplish.

Q: The storytelling here is really vivid but still simple. How do you know when a song says enough
without saying too much?
A: A song says enough when the message is clear. I went from wild to wise, it ́s all in the lyrics.
Q: You’ve played across diƯerent countries and scenes. Has that journey changed the way you
think about your own sound or identity as an artist?

A: Yes, I guess so. You learn by doing, so did I. This journey of being on stage everywhere, did
show me what people like, my kind of music, my voice, my appearance, the choice of music. You
can ́t always satisfy every single person that come to one of your shows, so I gave up trying to be
the perfect singer. If you come to my show, you know what you ́ll get or, at least, listen before
you come. I can be found on every streaming service.

Q: Do you feel like “Now I’m Wiser” represents where you are right now creatively, or is it more
like closing a chapter?
A: Neither of both, it is more a statement of growth in life. Creatively, honestly, I ́m still growing.
I ́ve written a lot of songs in the past 3 months, waiting to be recorded, so when it comes to
creativity, I ́m doing well and, like I said already, still growing.

Q: When people hear this song live, what do you hope they take away from it in that moment?

A: I hope that they also have some kind of reflection about how their life was and is now. And
that they come to me and saying: You know, John, I have experienced the same thing as where
you singing about.
Q: Looking ahead, what’s next for you for the rest of this year? Are you working toward more
releases, live shows, or something completely diƯerent?
A: Now, in April, there is a duet coming with a wonderful female singer and I ́m gonna record 2
more songs to be released by the end of April. Then, in June, I ́ll be in Nashville, Tennessee, for 2
more songs to be recorded. Concerning being on stage, there still are some gaps in the agenda,
so if anyone out here wants a good country concert, just contact me on www.bestcountry.eu
Thank you very much for this friendly and very kind interview, all the best and talk to you later
when my newest is out……
