Review:  The Finch Cycle & Champion Motorist – We Must Be Cautious

Sometimes, no plan is the best plan. The Finch Cycle and Champion Motorist walked into a rehearsal space in Melbourne’s inner north with zero expectations and came out with “We Must Be Cautious”, a gripping instrumental piece that moves with slow intensity and raw honesty.

Built over three days inside Three Phase Studios, the track grew from scratch. Rhythm guitar and drums were recorded live, no editing, no smoothing out. You can hear the air in the room, the creak of real fingers on real strings. It feels like listening in on something private.

Paul Shea’s drumming gives the track a strong, steady, patient backbone. Andrew McLaughlin’s guitar tones cut through with just the right amount of grit. Bradley Murray fills the spaces with thick bass and textural guitar lines that stretch the mood without overdoing it. It’s post-rock without the excess, focused on mood more than drama.

There’s something refreshing about how this track was made. You can tell these artists weren’t chasing perfection. They were chasing a feeling. The way each section opens into the next, slowly and deliberately, gives the track a grounded, unforced progression. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is forced.

Personally, I loved how live it all sounds. It’s rare these days to hear something that embraces flaws and keeps them in. That kind of confidence is rare, and it makes this song stick. The Finch Cycle and Champion Motorist plan to keep collaborating, and if “We Must Be Cautious” is any indication, there’s more gold to come. Make sure to follow both projects, and definitely add this one to your playlist. It’s out now on Bandcamp and all major streaming platforms.
