We spoke with Mitch Zorn about “Back To You” and more!

Hi! What inspired “Back To You,” and how does it capture the emotions behind its story?

A: Honestly it was mostly inspired by the melody, I’d love to say that there is a personal connection to it but I just loved the melody so much and the lyrics kind of just followed behind them.

The song blends piano and steel guitar—how did you develop its cinematic and nostalgic sound?

A: I was in the studio with my producers and we were talking about the direction for the song and all agreed that it should be as simple as possible so we tried to make it as stripped down as we could and let the groove take it where it needed to go.

“Back To You” explores love, longing, and desire—what personal experiences influenced the lyrics?

A: Like I said the song isn’t written about a particular story but I think we’ve all been in similar situations where we are torn between staying and going, leaving a relationship that we are more or less addicted to but know we shouldn’t be in.

As the title track of your debut album, how does this song represent the full project?

A: I think it represents the variety of sounds that are in the album, there are so many different types of songs and different sounds and I think “Back To You” just shows the diversity of the sound I am trying to create.

Following the success of “Home,” how does “Back To You” mark your growth as an artist?

A: I think the songwriting has changed and evolved over the years and “Back To You” is a solo write that I think really shows my colors as a songwriter, and the evolution of my melody writing.

Coming from Nakusp, BC, how has your journey influenced your perspective as a country artist?

A: Yeah I think growing up in a town that small has a way of giving you a unique perspective on the world that most don’t get, the difference in relationships, the difference in pace, it’s something you can only really speak on and write about authentically if you’ve been there.

You recently toured with Dillon James and Allison Daniels—what was the highlight of those shows?

A: That was my first time playing shows out east and my first real experience on tour. Dillon and Allison are so talented and just getting to share the stage with them and draw people in each night is what made it for me.

Country music is all about storytelling—what’s the deeper message behind “Back To You”?

A: I think the deeper message would be don’t go back to a relationship you know you shouldn’t be in even if it’s hard and even if it feels familiar.

With over a million streams on “Home,” how has streaming changed your relationship with fans?

A: I have received message from folks all over saying they love the song and to see it spread as far as it has in this country is something I’ll never take for granted.

What do you hope listeners feel when they hear “Back To You” for the first time?

A: I hope they feel the soul and the groove and I hope it helps them get through it if they are in the middle of something.
